Making the Grenade [Zbrush]

Grenade Steps

While learning how to use Zbrush at university. As a class we were set the task to follow a tutorial on the internet via badking.com.au./blog/ .Though I didn't finish the model I learnt quite a few techniques that I used to create my other models.

Here are the steps I took combined with screenshots in how I came to create my grenade.

Grenade:
1.       Insert a sphere

2.       Use the move tool to stretch the sphere to create an oval shape.

 3.       Mask lines symmetrical of one another drag down the oval. To create each segment mask left to right connecting the masked lines already going down the oval.

4.       Inflate the model; this creates the segments for the grenade.

5.       Go to the deformation tools and use the size tool to make the top 2-3 segment rows/lines smaller after masking it. Use the move tool and drag it back to its original place.

6.       Holding shift and left-clicking and with symmetry on, I begin to smooth out the top till you cannot see any deformation.

7.       Use the clip curve tool to cut the top and bottom of the model.

8.       Insert a cube and subdivide it about 3 -4 times.

9.       Use the move tool to increase or decrease the shapes form in order to create the model.

10.   Use the clip curve tool cut a corner off.

11. Size the shape/model down till it is quite small and fits on top of the grenade like In the screenshot.

12.   Clone the shape on the grenade and enlarge it.

13.   Using the mask tool, draw out the grenade lever.

  14.   After masking the block, extract it. You can change the thickness by changing the bars next the extract bar.

15.   Move the extracted object on top of the smaller model made earlier.

16.   Select the 2 protruding teeth like parts of the lever/clip and mask the centre of both, leaving a bit on the outside and without touching the rest of the clip/lever. Make the object soft by holding control and left-clicking (this allows for a smoother bend), bend/curve the selected parts to create a slight curve.

  17.   Again clone the small shape that is on top of the grenade and rotate it so you put the longest side underneath the teeth bit of the clip and against the small shape on the grenade. Also scale it down till it is about half the length of the side of the small shape.

Unfortunately that is as far as I got with the grenade tutorial.
Some of the things I found a bit frustrating when I was following the tutorial was the masking the the grenade lever, I just couldn't get it right and I kept changing it again and again and I'm still not pleased with the final product. Though I managed to work around it, I had to change the shape of the small cube-like shape that is placed underneath the teeth.
I didn't get any further with m grenade because I spent too much time trying to add the key-ring, that pulls the pin out. So I stopped and moved onto other things.
